A cunning plan

It's really too early for me to feel like doing a full Babylon 5 rewatch yet, so instead I had a possibly cursed idea, which is to watch IMDB's top 10 and bottom 10 rated episodes and report back on them. And in fact I think I am going to do exactly that.*

*Unless I get distracted by something along the way, as often happens.

The best/worst lists are hidden in case you want to preserve the element of surprise.

The 10 best episodes according to IMDB, starting at the top

1. Severed Dreams 3x10
2. War Without End Part 2 3x17 (Since Part 1 is also in the top 10, I'm just going to watch them together, I think)
3. Z'ha'dum 3x22
4. Endgame 4x20
5. Sleeping in Light 5x22
6. The Long, Twilight Struggle 2x20 (By about this point I will probably have died of Drama and Tragedy. RIP me.)
7. Point of No Return 3x09
8. The Coming of Shadows 2x09
9. The Fall of Night 2x22
10. War Without End Part 1 3x16 (will be combined with part 2)
11. No Surrender, No Retreat 4x15

This looks fun! (For Babylon 5 values of fun.)

And as an escape from all of these heavy episodes, apparently I will be watching, in order of worst to ... slightly less worst:

IMDB's lowest rated1. TKO 1x14
2. Infection 1x04
3. Secrets of the Soul 5x07
4. The Gathering 1x00
5. Grey 17 is Missing 3x19
6. Grail 1x15
7. The Long Dark 2x05
8. Strange Relations 5x06
9. The War Prayer 1x07
10. Survivors 1x11

Genuinely surprised that they're not even all from season one and five! Absolutely unsurprised that most of them are! I do genuinely like some of these, and at least one of them, I skipped most of when I was originally watching season one, so it will be interesting to see what I think of it now.

Not starting this tonight (probably) because I have other things to do, but Soon™.

I've come to a small turning in the road, metaphorically speaking. I've decided to quit newsblogging on Facebook, possibly permanently.

I am worn down by dealing with so much bad news all the time. When I worked long hours at newspapers, there was always something good in the mix, but now it's getting hard to find. And with the overflowing river of news these days, some days I work longer than I did at the papers, just to get through it and try to understand it all.

But there's more. In the last three months I have lost six people, some I've known for 30+ years, others all my life. A beloved older cousin, a talented and kind aunt, a teacher whom I will continue to learn from every time I open one of her books, two friends who always encouraged me (separately, in different ways) to be creative and innovative, and a third friend who challenged me to be as uniquely myself as she was uniquely herself. None of them were under 50, and all had rich full lives -- but the gaps they leave in the world are enormous, not just for me but for many others. And each death's loss and sadness get added to that which was here before, even if for some it was a relief at the end of long illness.

That's a lot. It would be a lot at any time, but it feels like more, now, because of all the horribleness going on -- ICE, the war with Iran, the Epstein entanglements and the many cruelties of this regime.

Also, nobody's paying me to newsblog. Not one no-longer-available cent. I've been doing it because it feeds my newsjunkieness, the reporter's need to know what's happening and tell others. It also ate my day, usually about six hours of it or more.

Enough.

I will still forward relevant articles (as long as I have arms and hands to type) but I'm not going to do the intense drop down into the zone any more, with multiple subject-categorized posts. I'd like to have a bit more life in my life than can be found behind a keyboard -- and have it be my own life, not one I'm looking at from the sidelines. I'll still write the Substack column, but leave it at that.

I will still be there, as I am here, just not as much every day.

And getting away from the keyboard serves my other life goal, which is to outlive the regime and the Occupant and his ilk (great non-swear-word for them) and have a good life doing it.

In which there is added poignancy due to the sole good RL news these past ten days, i.e. the Artemis II moon mission, which I admit to following avidly.

1. I got laundry done again this morning. We’re only here for three more days (only two full days) and it’s such a hassle to go to the other hotel, so I think we’ll just save any remaining dirty laundry for when we get home.

2. Today was a non-Disney day and we went to a couple non-touristy areas that we’d seen recommended by TabiEats. In the afternoon we went to Shizuoka to try and go to Tower Records, Pokémon Center, and Nintendo Store, but it was sooooooooooo crowded it was ridiculous. We did go to Tower (it’s a huge one and Carla finally found some of the CDs she’s been looking for for a long time) and then a Disney store we spotted on the way, but did not go to the Pokémon Center or Nintendo Store as with the level of crowds we figured it would probably be as crowded as the ones at Osaka Station had been and we didn’t want to deal with that. Having the contrast of the non-touristy places in the morning with the hell of Shibuya on a Sunday afternoon made us appreciate our low-stress morning even more (and all the food we had was delicious).

3. We came back to the hotel too early to get dinner while we were out and didn’t want to go back out again, so we tried out the hotel restaurant. It’s a buffet and not worth the price they charge but it was decent (better than the one at the hotel next door that we ate at last year), and it was nice to just not have to go out somewhere.

4. The weather was pretty nice today. Sunny, but we managed to stay in the shade most of the time, and the temps were lower than yesterday. Tomorrow and Tuesday should be similar, though even more overcast (hopefully that’s actually true).

1. I visited an art museum today, and now I need a nap.

2. More sorting games!

3. Books finished: I was skeptical about whether I'd enjoy Star Shipped, given that it was a contemporary romance. I was perhaps less interested in the main pairing than in how the novel incorporated fandom activity for the fictional show and how I've definitely read slashfic with the same gimmick before. I also recently finished Sorcery and Small Magics, a fantasy/romance (romantasy?) with an interesting magic system and enjoyable forest adventures. The only thing that bothered me was that it seemed to have the aesthetics of pre-Industrial England, but inconsistently modern sensibilities in terms of gender and sexuality. Of course, it's a fantasy world and not actually imperial Britain. I also fell asleep multiple times listening to the audiobook and may have missed an explanation about the setting. In any event, I'm looking forward to the sequel, because the romance part is still unresolved, argh!

4. Currently reading: Still Hitler, the Germans, and the Final Solution, mainly because I keep picking up other books that are on more pleasant topics and have larger font sizes. I'm also listening to the audiobooks for Cinder House (Cinderella retelling, with ghosts) and Between Two Rivers: Ancient Mesopotamia and the Birth of History.

Things are still hard, and they suck, but it's warmer and there are no missiles flying at my house and I'm cautiously optimistic about coming back to work tomorrow and well. I hope your days are good, friends.

The other prompt fill I wrote today ended up being full-story-length (~1100 wds) for Babylon 5, posted on AO3 as Exercises in Linguistics.

The prompt was: G'Kar and Londo (slash or gen, up to you!) and Language. Set in early season 5, probably between about 5x02 & 5x06.

and oh god it's so good, that unique polished authorial confidence of The Fortunate Fall is so back, and like The Fortunate Fall it's a book that's somehow slipped out of time, not exactly in sync with the present moment in sf/f but maybe both older and newer, and it's very quiet and calm except for that bit in a recent chapter which actually made me make an involuntary noise of shock and alarm out loud, and I have no idea where it's going and I hope she sticks the landing but right now the vibes are Stars In My Pocket Like Grains Of Sand and The Left Hand of Darkness, and what with those being two of my favourite novels ever, I'm having a very good time.

1. I got the final confirmation from the tax guy so I was able to sign in the app and have those sent off. I get really antsy leaving it so close to the deadline so that’s a weight off my mind to have it all done finally.

2. After yesterday’s rain, today was warm and very sunny. And muggy. Ugh! And since it was Saturday, the crowds were out in force, but we still have a really nice day today at DisneySea. Tomorrow we are doing non-Disney stuff and then going back to the park on Monday which should be both less crowded and not as hot and sunny, so fingers crossed.

Catching up on some older prompts now that I'm in between books.

1. EvS on Sakhalin

Prompt: EvS, that last night on Sakhalin between when Biggles first speaks to him and his escape the next day.

Posted on Tumblr here.

2. EvS & Algy (Biggles/EvS implied)

Prompt: Set post defection in London. A misunderstanding leads to Biggles being told that Erich is cheating on him. After some angst and h/c, their relationship is even stronger.

We had a nice, relatively relaxing day today that kept us mostly out of the rain. There actually wasn’t much rain most of the day, just sprinkling off and on, though it did start coming down harder here and there in the evening.

We went to a little train museum not too far from the resort area that required taking a train and then a bus, and I’ve never taken a bus in Japan before so that was fun. We also ate at a family restaurant (Gusto), which is another thing I’ve never done before. This one was very high tech. You order off a tablet (which we’ve seen a fair amount of), the food comes to you by robot, and then it’s self-checkout at the register. There was also a Book Off right nearby so we got some books and CDs, and then since it wasn’t raining right then, instead of getting on the bus where we got off, we walked several stops towards our destination before getting on, which got us a nice little neighborhood walk in a less touristy area than where we’ve mainly been so far. In the evening we went to Ikspiari for dinner and more shopping. I definitely feel like we’re getting the hang of Ikspiari now. It was soooooo confusing last time and I stil hate the layout, but we were able to navigate without too much trouble this time. Now we’re back at the hotel early and can just relax before our big DisneySea day tomorrow.

The Testaments (1.01 - 1.03

The first three episodes of The Testaments have been dropped in my part of the world on Disney +. It's an adapatation of Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name, which is a decades later written sequel to her famous dystopian classic The Handmaid's Tale; when it was published, I reviewed it here. Just to make their lives more complicated, though, the show is also a sequel to the tv series The Handmaid's Tale. The first (very good) season of which I watched, but not the later ones, as word of mouth about diminishing quality and lack of time have detained me, but I did osmose this presents a problem because not only is the backstory the showin its later seasons developed for one of the central characters (Aunt Lydia) very different from her backstory in the novel, but the timeline of another central character is different as well. With this in mind, my spoilery reaction to the first three episodes is beneath the cut. Above cut: those first three episodes are well acted and produced and make some interesting choices re: adapting the source material - and I don't mean "interesting" as a euphemism for bad -, but haven't revealed yet how they'll solve the Lydia problem.

1. New Dungeon Crawler Carl book comes out in just a month! I'm wondering if I should reread the previous book before it drops, because these books have about a zillion characters and I'm confident that I have forgotten most of what happened in it.

2. The thing which happened to me on Tumblr today was so weird that I'm going to describe it under the cut even though I already complained privately to friends. (Murderbot fandom is so freakin' weird. Seriously.)

Awkward! )

3. Speaking of Space Swap, they are still looking for some pinch hitters!
